Hi! My name is Deon and
I’m a pro photographer.
I started my photographic career at age 12 with a Kodak 110 camera. Within four years I photographed my first wedding, the profits paid for a darkroom which led to me managing the school photo club and then the university photo club.
For my two-year military conscription, I was assigned as a photojournalist. I worked for the base newspaper and the National Defence Force magazine “Paratus.” With an unlimited budget I was in photo-heaven and I experimented to my heart’s content leaving the military having recorded 43 000+ photos.
I started a Foto First Lab & Studio and did every type of photography imaginable, more weddings than I could count, real estate, commercial, pack shots, industrial, modelling portfolios, travel, pets, and sport, specialising in golf and golf courses. I freelanced for the Complete Golfer Magazine and did many shoots for them incl. Sun City Million Dollar Golf Tournaments. Digital photography forced the closure of my lab and I started an I.T. company. After too many years, I couldn’t resist the urge to pick up a camera again. We moved to the arty country town of Parys, Free State on the banks of the Vaal River. Due to the abundance of guesthouses and a vibrant, property market in Parys I’ve been specialising in real estate photography ever since. I still do a lot of work in Johannesburg and all over South Africa. Back home I spend as much time as possible near the river, either photographing, fly fishing, kayaking or working on a coffee table photo book with short sketches of people I meet on my travels.
What I do
I specialise in real estate & website photography
With so many businesses going online I specialise in custom website photography. Being a writer and photojournalist aids in telling the businesses story through photography.
I have a unique talent to isolate and highlight those elements that help sell or rent your property and I know just how to photograph them to make them look their best.
I love taking creative portraits of models and couples. I try my best never to repeat locations and always do something different.
I do landscape photography for the odd travel magazine article but mostly just for fun. I love photographing farms that instil peace and on the other end of the scale informal settlements that shout chaos.
