Photography

It started with a Kodak 110 and a very patient family bulldog as my first subject. By sixteen I'd photographed my first wedding — the profits paid for my own darkroom. From there: the school photo club, then the university photo club, then two years as an army photojournalist, shooting for the base newspaper and the SANDF's national magazine, Paratus. Unlimited budget, unlimited film — I left having shot over 43,000 photographs.

That appetite turned into Foto First Lab & Studio in Johannesburg, where I shot almost everything a camera can be pointed at: weddings, commercial work, industrial, modelling portfolios, travel, pets, sport — and golf, which became a specialty of its own. I freelanced for Complete Golfer Magazine, shot the Sun City Million Dollar Golf Tournament and the SA Open, and published South Africa's first golf calendar.

Digital photography closed the lab, so I built an IT company instead — but the camera never stayed down for long. These days, based in the Karoo, I specialise in real estate and guesthouse photography, along with commercial and website photography for businesses that need to look as good online as they do in person. Still shooting across Johannesburg and the rest of South Africa. Off the clock, you'll find me near the river — fly fishing, kayaking, or slowly building a coffee-table book of the water itself.
